Our little gardens have been growing very quickly! We have needed to re-pot many of them into bigger pots so they have room to continue growing. Together with the Senior and Junior Rooms, we have been working in the garden to get it ready to plant our plants. We needed to do a lot of weeding and sorting out all of the soil. It is great to see everyone working together to create a great space for our school garden.
Welcome to Waiwera South Primary School's Middle Room blog! We are 19 enthusiastic, positive learners in years 3, 4 and 5.

Haunted House Writing/Art
Last week we did a Halloween related activity. We created some art to go alongside our writing. The first part was painting the sky. We started with a white circle for the moon and then added either purple or blue paint each ring around the moon, making it darker each time. We then cut out a house silhouette and stuck them onto our painted sky background. Some of us added birds, trees, tombstones and even witches to add to the effect of the Haunted House! Now we needed some writing to go alongside our art. We had to use some persuasive writing to try and sell our houses. Our aim was to try turn the negatives into positives. There were some really fantastic pieces of writing and our art work looks very effective up on the wall!

Inquiry- Garden
This term we are looking at how we can create a successful school garden. We have been given a lot of ‘little gardens’ from SchoolKit and other generous people that we have been planting over the last two days. We started with making the soil. It was cool to watch the soil disk grow when we added the water. We then put some soil into the pottles followed by the seeds or seed disks, before finally adding more soil on top. We look forward to watching our little gardens grow over the next couple of weeks.

Otago Cricket Visits
We have been lucky enough to have a couple of visits from Otago Cricket. We had two visits where we played some warm-up games and practiced our cricket skills. Thanks to Eli and Dion from Otago Cricket for the fun sessions. Check out some photos below.

Maths- Baking
Over the past couple of weeks in Maths, we have been looking at Mass, Volume, and Capacity. Today we got to use some of the things we have learned to do some baking. We looked at measuring the ingredients using kilograms, grams, teaspoons, and milliliters. We used some Halloween cutters to create the shapes of the biscuits. We then got to ice them in fun and colourful ways and then finally eat them! It was a fun way to finish off our Maths unit.

Sports Activator
Today we had a visit from Mitch who is our Sports Activator for this term. The focus today was cricket. We began with a quick warm-up game of turning cones. We were in two teams and had to turn up as many cones as we could. The other team would have to turn them back the other way. It was a very fast paced and exciting game! Next, we moved onto some cricket skills. We worked on our catching skills where Mitch would throw us really high balls and we had to run in and catch them. Then it was time to practice our running between the wickets. We also worked on our bowling where we had to bowl at the stumps. It was a really fun session. Thanks Mitch for coming along, we can’t wait for your next session.

Maths
Lately in Maths we have been looking at Mass, Volume, and Capacity. Today we did a fun activity where we had to design a boat only using tinfoil. The aim was to see which boat would hold the most marbles before sinking. It was interesting to see the different shapes and designs of the boats. We found out the boats that held the most were the lighter boats with larger surface areas. The boats lasted longer if the marbles were evenly distributed throughout the boat. It was a fun activity that we all enjoyed.
