Tuesday 30th May

Rippa Tournament

Today was the annual South West Otago Rippa Rugby Tournament held at the Balclutha Showgrounds. It was a rather cold day but we were very lucky it didn’t rain! Waiwera South had four teams competing in this Tournament with all students from Years 3-8. All teams tried really hard and it was great to see fantastic team work happening throughout all four teams.

Thanks to those parents who managed our teams and those that came along for support. We all had a great day! Check out the slideshow below of our day!

Thursday 25th May

Sports Activator

We have been making the most of the good weather and have been getting outside to practice some Rippa Rugby. Yesterday we had another visit from our sports activator Greer. We went through some skills and games to help us prepare for the Rippa Rugby Tournament in Balclutha next week. We started with a game of rob the nest. This was where we had to get the balls from the middle or other teams hoops to bring back to our own hoop. The winner was the first team to get 5 balls in their hoop. We then played a game where we had to try rip the tags off everyone and put them on our own belt. The winner was the person with the most tags. We also played a game of rippa rush and ended the session playing rippa numbers. This was where Greer called out a number and that many people from the team had to run around a cone and start playing a game of rippa. They had 3 rips to try score a try before it was the other team's turn. It was a very fast paced game and we were all out of breath in no time. These games were great to get us prepared for the Rippa Tournament which will be taking place next Tuesday the 30th at the Balclutha Showgrounds.

Rippa

We were very lucky to have a beautiful afternoon today so we decided to get outside for some Rippa practice. The whole school made the most of the sun and joined in too. We started with a game of Rippa Rush. This was where we had to try run from one end of the field to the other without the ‘taggers’ ripping our tags off. It was very exhausting but a lot of fun! We then practiced our skills with a couple of games. This was great preparation for when the Year 3-8 attend the Rippa Tournament in a few weeks time.

Thursday 26th May

Sports Activator

Today we had Greer call in again for another skills session for rippa rugby. It was great to see the sun out shining after a few days of wet and cold weather. We got straight into it with a game of seaweed where fast running and stepping were keys to winning.
Next we worked on our passing. We practiced passing from both sides focusing on using the power from our hips. We then played a fun game where we followed Greers actions until she said "ball"! Then it was a race to see who could grab the ball first. It was a lot of fun and we all showed our competitive streaks! We also spent time practicing our stepping and dodging. Then it was time to put all our skills together with a game of rippa. It was a fast paced game and we found that teamwork was an important part of winning. We look forward to using these skills next week in Balclutha at the rippa tournament.

Thursday 5th May

Sports Activator

On Tuesday Greer came to teach us some rippa rugby skills.
First we practiced our ripping skills by playing a game where we had to get as many rips as possible. It was trickier than it looked!
Next it was time to practice our passing skills. We learnt how to pass from our hips and even practiced passing from both sides which proved a challenge.
After we had mastered our passing we played a game of bullrush. This helped us to work on our running, dodging and ripping.
Finally we got to put together all the skills we had been learning and practicing and play a game of rippa. This really helped with our teamwork and communicating as well.

These skills will be useful for our rippa rugby tournament coming up on the 31st May. Everyone loved our rippa session and cannot wait for next time! It was also great to have such a lovely day to be outside enjoying some sport.
