Tuesday 11th April
Football Tournament
Today we went to the Football Tournament at the Showgrounds in Balclutha. Waiwera South entered two teams: The Waiwera All Whites and the Waiwera Phoenix. Everyone got stuck in and tried their best, making great improvements throughout the day. Thanks heaps to John and Darrell for managing our teams and to all the parents for providing transport. It was a great day out.

Thursday 6th April
Mandarin
Last time Amy visited, we played a game of ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’. We had to sneak up behind the ‘wolf’ and say “What’s the time Mr Wolf” in Mandarin. When it was dinner time, the wolf would turn around and try catch someone. It was a really fun game and helped us with our time.
Today we had another Mandarin lesson. Our new Mandarin teacher this year is called Amy. In today's session we were making lanterns. We had a piece of red paper and we drew half the pattern on the edge of the folded red paper. When we cut the paper it made the full symmetrical lantern shape. They look very cool and are hanging on our classroom walls for everyone to see.

Inquiry
This term our Inquiry topic has been “What Can I Tell You About Me”. The children have all been working really hard on their presentations. It has been great to see everyone taking initiative with their research and working independently on their projects. Some of these include slides, show me’s, posters and presentation boards all about themselves and their families. We can’t wait to share these at the Whanau afternoon early next term.

Maths
Over the last couple of weeks for Maths we have been learning about Measurement, in particular length and area. Everyone has been very independent and have been working through tasks like measuring how many people can squeeze into a cube, how long different objects around the classroom are and working out what the perfect chair would be for your height. It has been great to see the children so engaged with their learning.

Friday 31st March
El Gregoe
Today we had a visit from performer El Gregoe. He is a magician and ventriloquist. He performs in a show called “You’ve Got the Power” which is sponsored by Trustpower. El Gregoe performed in the Waiwera South Community Hall and Clinton School also came and watched his performance. He did some awesome tricks including making birds appear and disappear, cutting a child in half and having never ending water. Along with the magic tricks, El Gregoe’s show was about anti-bullying and why this is a terrible thing. He talked about using your WITS which we use at school. WITS stands for Walk away, Ignore, Talk to a teacher/adult and Stay away. He also taught us that it is important to be a HERO at school. This stands for Honesty, Empathy, Respect/resilient and Opportunities. It was awesome to watch El Gregoe perform and to listen to his messages. We have a few keen magicians now! Sports Activator
Today we had another visit from our sports activator Greer. In today’s session, we were focusing on soccer. We started with a few warm up games of flush the toilet and shark tag. We then moved onto some dribbling and passing skills. Finally we finished with a game where we were able to put all of our skills into practice. This is great practice for when we attend the Football Tournament next month.
