Maths- Statistics

Lately in Maths we have been learning about statistics. Everyone had to plan and conduct an investigation based around sports questions. Some questions posed were:

How many sit ups can the Middle Room do in a minute?

How many skips in a minute can you do?

How long can you hang from the monkey bars?

How much does your breathing change before and after exercise?

What is the average height of gymnastic bridges in the Middle Room?

We have been collecting this information this week and although it was hard at times, it was great to integrate some fitness into our maths. We have been having a discussion about things that can affect our data and what this would do to our results and findings. Our next step will be to analyse the data and write a report about what we find.

Monday 10th October

Term 4

Welcome back everyone to the last Term of the year. The Middle Room have all have a great two weeks holiday but everyone is pleased to get back to school.

Term 4 is a very busy Term and there are a lot of exciting things happening including our Camp in Week 4.

Below is this Terms Morning Programme schedule. We start next Monday in Week 2. There will be no Morning Programme or homework in Week 4 as we are at our camp in Waihola.

Thursday 22nd September

Sports Activator

We have has a busy last week at school. We had a great day for Greer to visit to have another session of touch skills. We start off with some warm-up games which were a lot of fun. Then it was time to practice our skills especially passing and stepping. We round off with a quick game which was very fast paced. We are all improving so much each time Greer visits. These lessons are going to help many of us with our after school touch.

Baking

The past few weeks for Maths we have been learning about fractions. We have all worked hard and learned a lot. For our reward for working hard this term Miss Chapman let us do some baking! We had to deal with lots of measurements like ½ cup, ⅓ cup and tsp. The class split into two groups and made lolly cake and russian fudge. They both tasted so yum! Unfortunately we didn’t take any photos of the end products as they were gobbled up so quickly!

Oral Presentation Day

This term our inquiry has been focussed around Then and Now. We have looked at things from the past to what they are like now. These included transport, household items, clothes, and schools. We have worked really hard to produce a speech about a topic we are passionate about. Today was the day we presented them to the whole school, parents and friends of the school. We were all very nervous but everyone of us did a fantastic job. Then it was time to perform our dances we have been learning with Kayleigh Broad after lunch on Thursdays. These were performed down at the hall and we got a big crowd watching us. We got a lot of great feedback that we did an awesome job! Wednesday 14th September

Sports Activator

It was a beautiful sunny day to be outside today. Greer was back to take us for some touch again. We warmed up with a game of tails where we had to grab the tail of another player and try to avoid ours getting taken. George was the winner of this game every time! We then moved on to our passing, dodging and defending skills before bringing these all together in a whole class game of touch. 

Its's great to see all of our skills improving. This will be important when we start playing our touch games.

Friday 9th September

Visit to Ken and Kate's

On Friday we were lucky enough to visit Ken and Kate's historical house, just down the road, as part of our Then and Now inquiry unit. Their house really is amazing! It has two wings to it, one side where the maids and servants use to live and the other side where the family lived. There are still lots of cool old things in the house that we learnt about. We also noticed lots of similarities with Olveston Historic Home that we visited earlier in the term.

We are very thankful to Ken and Kate for opening up their house to us. We learnt a wealth of new information and think this house would be pretty cool to live in!

Tuesday 6th September

Touch

Today we were also lucky to receive another visit from Grant Milne who came to teach us some touch. First we warmed up with a couple of games of shark tag. We had to work on our sidestepping, acceleration and defending. We could then take these skills into a game of touch. It was girls vs boys so was an interesting game. Everyone had a great time and improved their touch skills. These will come in handy for those students who are playing touch this year.

Thanks for coming Grant, we really enjoyed it.

Tuesday 6th September

Inquiry- Then and Now

Today we had a visit from Hamish as part of our inquiry unit - Then and Now. He brought in lots of old things for us to look at and he talked about how things have changed over time. We were able to ask our own questions about how life was back in the olden days. Some of the things we found out about will be very helpful for our Oral Presentations coming up in a couple of weeks. It was so cool to see all the awesome items Hamish brought with him. We found this very interesting and we learnt heaps. It was great to have Hamish here, thanks heaps for coming!

Touch
