National Train Safety Week!
This week we have been focusing on National Train Safety Week, learning lots about how to be safe around trains. This is really important for us because our school and some of our homes are near train tracks. Yesterday the train that goes past every afternoon, stopped for us and we listened to the driver tell us some important things about train safety. Some of the things we have learnt this week include:
- do not put anything on the rail track.
- don't pour liquids on the tracks.
- don't switch the tracks.
- don't go under trains.
- don't fiddle with anything on trains or the tracks.
- don't jump carriage to carriage.
- don't throw rocks at the train.
- the wee white box is for emergencies and you will find this near intersections with the road.
- the people you contact in the white box will notify train drivers.
- do not play on train tracks as the drivers can not stop trains very quickly. They also have to save themselves.
- don't play chicken on the train tracks.
- don't climb between the rail carriages.
- if there is something on the track don't play with it.
- stand 5 metres back from the train track.
- don't touch the train track because you could get an electric shock.
- there is a live current through any part of the tracks.
- keep off rail bridges as they are only wide enough for the train!
- don't put anything on the tracks.
- stay out of the control room.
- trains can not stop or 600m. The driver will slam the breaks on then he will get down low and not look at what is in front of him if there is someone or something on the track. He has to look after himself and this is what the law says.
- don't block the train tracks.
- don't hit the train tracks as they can get dinted.
- trains can carry up to 2000 tonnes.
- don't dig a hole on the tracks.
- DO NOT FIDDLE WITH TRAINS AT ALL.

This is the safety box. If there is an accident go to the safety box and there is an emergency phone number to ring in there and it shows you what line you are on.
