Inquiry

Last Term our inquiry topic was ‘What makes a Kiwi Inventor?’ Today we presented our Going Further projects to the rest of the class. Some of the ways we presented these were slides and posters. Some even made a prototype of their inventions to support their presentation. It was great to see the time and effort that went into these projects.

George and Flynn looked at Handpieces.

Courtney told us about the Gold Coast Theme parks.

Emily showed us her poster on Bungy Jumping.

Hayden telling us about remote control cars.

Esther did her presentation on bikes.

Caitlyn looked into robots.

Taylor sharing her findings of spaceships.

James explaining his prototype he made for his invention of a citrus powered clock.

Rylee told us about headphones.

Bree's presentation was all about cars.

Nikita telling us all about the invention of T.Vs.

Kordelia made a slide about computers.

Tristan sharing the slide about computers that he created with Arthur.

Healthy Eating

For the next couple of weeks our health topic is Food and Nutrition. This week we looked at the food pyramid. We had to cut out a range of different foods and place them in the 6 food groups on the food pyramid. It was quite interesting to see how many serves we should have of each food group and the types of foods we should be eating more of. This topic is going to link in with our Life Education Bus visit in week 3.

Class-ified School Kit

Yesterday was the day planned for our Skype session with our school we were matched with through School Kit. Unfortunately, their internet connection at their school wasn’t very good and we were unable to have our interaction. Luckily the Senior Room offered to give us an opportunity to use our skills we had been practicing to locate a mystery school. We each picked a random school in New Zealand and took turns asking questions through a Skype call to narrow down where our mystery school could be. Thanks to the Senior Room for helping us out. It was great to be able to use our questioning and Google mapping skills and it was a lot of fun.

Esther our Ambassador asking the questions.

Our detectives writing down questions to ask the Senior Room.

Our responders using Google Maps to answers questions about our school.

Maths

For the last couple of weeks, we have been looking at angles. We learned that a right angle is 90°, an acute angle is anything less than 90°, and an obtuse angle is any angle more than 90° but less than 180°. We practiced measuring several different angles using protractors which proved to be quite difficult! We also measured the angles that the letters in our names provide. It was pretty cool to be able to design some artwork that involved maths!

Fire Brigade Visit

Yesterday we were lucky enough to get a visit from Maurice, John, Darrell and Noodle from the Waiwera South Fire Brigade. It was very interesting to see what appliances were on and inside the truck. We got to sit in the fire engine and also have a go at using the fire hose. Darell then got dressed up in the Breathing Apparatus and showed us how it works and why it is an essential piece of equipment. The fireman finished by answering some of our questions and talked to us about what to do if we are ever in a fire. Thank you very much to the men from the Waiwera South Fire Brigade for coming along. We really appreciated it.

Digitals Dynamos Afternoon

Yesterday some of the Senior Room students ran a Digital Dynamos afternoon. James, Lucy, Maddie and Julienne ran two workshops each. The rest of the students booked into the two workshops that interested them. There was a lot of experimenting and problem solving with each of the programmes that were on offer. The children attended workshops on Bitmoji, Sploder, Tagul/Word Clouds, Incredibox and Soundstation Studio, Spritebox, Code.org and Stop Motion Animator. It was a very successful afternoon and we hope the students can now teach others about the apps and programmes they were learning about.
